Shitty Interview No.42

Dia, aka West Coast/New England blooded artist/singer/musician, Danielle Birrittella is ready to unleash her debut EP titled ‘Tiny Ocean’. The sessions were conducted in Los Angeles with Joey Waronker (Beck, REM, Atoms for Peace), Tim Carr (HAIM) & Frankie Siragusa (TheLAB). On Tiny Ocean, Dia’s musical landscape is paved with the sonic spirits of contemporaries ranging from St. Vincent to Warpaint.

Just in time for music Monday, we have the pleasure of premiering Dia’s title track ‘Tiny Oceans’, which has become my new ‘life is so fucking beautiful’ song… that one I blast during my afternoon walk, just as the sun is setting. All the fit people jogging by me see my huge weird grin & red teary eyes & think I’m high AF.

We of course took this opportunity to shitty interview Dia, so please enjoy now, along with an exclusive instant film series by Los Angeles photographer, Carter Quick.

Sticks & Stones: What can you teach us in the school of life?
Dia: Ha, I’m learning. Lately it’s been; you are not your mind. Don’t be afraid to say sorry. Vulnerability is really good, almost always. & breathing, breathing is very good too. oh Jesus.

Sticks & Stones: Your life rules & you can invite any artist to perform at your next birthday party. Who is it?
Dia: I would want to sit in an old room with high ceilings & crazy acoustics & listen to Maria Callas sing probably almost anything, but most likely ‘Verdi’. She was a living goddess. She breaks my heart.

Sticks & Stones: What do you do on your day off?
Dia: I have a hard time with days off, it’s something I’m working on. A pretend imagined day off would include; bicycle riding, lake or ocean swimming & sunning, some weird craft project, like a dream catcher or flower crowns, cooking something fancy in a gigantic kitchen that overlooks a body of water.

Sticks & Stones: How do you feel about eggs being chicken periods?
Dia: Oh, thank you for that image! wow. I’ve had bouts of veganism because of this very fact. It’s kind of impossible to practice “mindful eating” & swallow flesh, etc.

Sticks & Stones: What do your stars say about you today? Is it accurate?
Dia: suuuper accurate. My dad learned astrology way back before I was born, so maybe I’ve known what or how I was supposed to be for too long & have become that.
Pisces (drawing of sun) = sensitive, emotional, confused, sparkly.
Sagittarius (rising) = firey, angry/feisty, intense, searching & seeking.
Libra (drawing of moon) = Love of things looking soooo pretty. Obsessed with perfection in form. Always seeking balance.

Sticks & Stones: What’s important?
Dia: Making things & being honest & sweet if possible. Making things is probably the number one most important thing for sanity. The act of creation gets me out of my head, & not filtering or editing that process is how the surprises come.

Sticks & Stones: What was the last thing you had to go see your doctor about?
Dia: I was filming a video in the desert with a cowboy & a horse. I had never been on a horse before & I think the cowboy was excited about that, so he rode really fast. I was wearing a dress. The horse wasn’t very well groomed. hmmm…. Maybe you can imagine the rest. not lovely.

Sticks & Stones: Plz draw the last pic you posted on instagram.
Dia: (drawing of a band playing at the ‘Dirty Laundry bar’).

Sticks & Stones: Best thing you’ve ever made?
Dia: That’s a secret.
Runners up;
– the first voice memos of the first songs I ever wrote.
-a diamond ring for my best friend Alison.
-A big painting to my ex-love that he’s never seen.

Sticks & Stones: Worst thing about being you?
Dia: Ambivalence resulting from unnecessary fear.
